Thank you Teddy Roosevelt!

November 7th
Why am I thanking Teddy Roosevelt? Today is Hug a Bear Day! The story is in 1902 Roosevelt was in Mississippi on a hunting trip, and a group of men he was with, cornered a bear, tormented it and clubbed it, and then tied it to a tree, and they asked Roosevelt to shoot it. He refuse, feeling it was inhumane to treat the animal in such a way, and felt that the bear needed to be put down humanely.
A cartoon was drawn up of the incident, making fun of Roosevelt, but alot of people agreed with him. Awhile later a storekeeper saw the cartoon and was inspired to create a toy doll that was in the shape of a bear, asked for Roosevelt's permission using his name. Permission was granted, and at first the bear was called "Teddy's Bear" and then gradually just became Teddy Bear. This obscure shopkeeper was Morris Michtom, and once the Teddy Bears became a hit, he founded the Ideal Novelty and Toy Co.
By 1906 manufacturers other than Michtom and Steiff had joined in and the craze for "Roosevelt Bears" was such that ladies carried them everywhere, children were photographed with them, and Roosevelt used one as a mascot in his bid for re-election.
There were books, and other things that came out soon after that. One of the children's books was "The Roosevelt Bears" by Seymour Eaton.
And from the love of Teddy Bears came the Build a Bear Workshop, I love that place, so fun and engaging!

National Bittersweet Chocolate With Almonds Day
I am strange, I am NOT a fan of bittersweet chocolate (okay, you can give me fifty lashes with a wet noodle). Honestly the only time I like bittersweet or dark chocolate is if its mixed with a sweet flavor, like oranges, mint, cherries, etc. Because they give it just that right amount of sweetness. Peppermint Patties, Mounds, Chocolate covered Cherries, such as that.
But I also realize there are a lot of people out there who LOVE bittersweet or dark chocolate, and today is YOUR day!
Also, dark chocolate is actually good for you, has the good antioxidants in it that helps the blood flow. (And any woman can attest to the fact that any good chocolate helps the blood flow!!).
What is your favorite chocolate? Mine alas is anything with peanut butter or caramel added in!
